The city of Northampton is now facing a lawsuit from a Holyoke woman thrown to the ground by Northampton police and pepper sprayed during a traffic stop in April. The attorney for 60-year-old Marisol Driouech, Dana Goldblatt, wrote a letter to city officials stating her client claims damages due to the injuries from the arrest by Officers Sellew and Bartlett. Goldblatt claims Northampton police have engaged in a “pattern and practice of discriminating against Hispanic persons and targeting them for traffic stops”. Goldblatt’s says Driouech now suffers from dizziness, burning in her eyes, difficulty walking and inability to work. An investigation into the use of force, conducted by an outside firm, concluded that Sellew’s actions were “reasonable and proportionate”. The amount of the damages sought has not been released.
