Easthampton’s new rules for Airbnb and Vrbo rentals are drawing mixed reaction from property owners. The city now requires short-term rentals to register, undergo annual inspections and meet new fire-safety standards, with a citywide cap of 50 properties. Cease-and-desist notices posted at some rentals before the July deadline caught several owners off guard, and city officials later acknowledged the rollout could have been communicated better. So far, 13 of roughly 40 eligible properties have registered.
