Three Amherst middle school guidance counselors accused of misgendering and mistreating gay and transgender students have been told they are not in violation of Title 9 anti-discrimination laws. MassLive reports that interim principal for both Amherst middle school and high school Talib Sadiq made the decisions in October and November, just before an outside investigator determined that the Amherst-Pelham public school district had failed to adequately address the claims of harassment of LGBT students by school staff. Sadiq’s decision was based on the fact that the counselors’ behavior, while “offensive” did not impede students’ access to educational services. Some Amherst parents told MassLive that Sadiq’s decision was “outrageous.”
