Valley Activist Francis Crowe Rests In Peace

The 100 year-old peace activist from Northampton, Francis Crowe, rests in peace. Francis Crowe the Quaker and founder of the local chapter of the American Friends Service Committee has died. Crowe was born in Carthage, MI in 1919 and moved to Northampton in 1951 with her husband Thomas. Her early activism was in the aftermath of the US use of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. During the Vietnam War, Crowe helped as many as 2000 young men become consciencious objectors to that war. She went on the co-found the Traprock Peace Center in Deerfield and continued to work on various social justice issues.
Crowe and her 100th Anniversary were the focus of WHMP’s Women’s History Month Programming in March.
