Stand up for local farms! Today, the River is running a Farm Stand – an all-day marathon gathering public support for The Massachusetts Farm Resiliency Fund to help farmers affected by this year’s flooding.
JOIN WRSI TO KEEP OUR LOCAL FARMS AFLOAT!
In July, flooding spread across more than 2,700 acres of farmland in western and central Mass, causing estimated crop losses over $15 million. This came on the heels of two untimely freezes earlier in the year, which decimated the peach crop throughout the Northeast and reduced blueberry and apple crops locally. In the weeks that followed, heavy rains caused even more crop losses on even more farms.
In response, Governor Healey joined an alliance of local non-profits and foundations to establish the Massachusetts Farm Resiliency Fund, which is providing immediate financial relief to affected farms and growers in Central and Western Massachusetts.
The Farm Resiliency Fund has already raised $3 million towards their initial goal of $5 million, and they have already awarded an initial round of funds to 214 local farms. They aren’t finished yet — and you can help! Donate today and your gift will be matched by Farm Stand’s generous sponsors:
