Rocker Beck turned down multiple offers to create the theme song to acclaimed TV series “Mad Men.”
The “Loser” hitmaker has penned a number of tracks for films and TV shows over the years, but one opportunity that passed him by was for the advertising-focused drama, which has since gone on to win multiple accolades, including 15 Emmy Awards.
He admits to Billboard magazine that sometimes he doesn’t make the best decisions in business, saying, “I wish I had more confidence. I think that’s probably my Achilles’ heel… My instinct has definitely gone awry; I could give you many examples.”
He continues, “Several years ago, I turned down repeated requests to write the theme song for a new cable TV series. ‘It’s about ad executives in the ’60s? They’re going to make a show about that? Really? Um, I don’t think so’. Yeah, just like the best show ever made!”
After Beck passed up multiple offers from Mad Men bosses, the job eventually went to American producer RJD2, whose “A Beautiful Mine” track has since become synonymous with the show.
